About the Business
As one of the oldest investment management firms in the United States, this company provides investment products to individuals, institutions and financial professionals in the US, including wealth management, defined contribution investment only and sub-advisory services.
The Business Problem
The investment management firm wanted to exit its datacenter and move to the cloud to better meet web traffic demands, growth, and its stakeholders’ needs, but it lacked the internal knowledge, experience, and resources necessary to complete the migration alone. It wanted to work with a partner with deep migration experience to guide its IT transformation and chose 2nd Watch to assist.
2nd Watch initiated a POC involving just a few applications as the company’s starting point in its cloud transformation. Working with 2nd Watch, the company migrated and re-platformed 70 websites from its previous datacenter into AWS as a first step into the cloud. This phase included investigation, DMZ build out, migration of 18 servers into a previously deployed Landing Zone solution, and refactoring of instances as needed.
In an effort to become more cloud-native and based on 2nd Watch’s recommendation after reviewing AWS infrastructure design requirements, the company decided to refactor and rearchitect the websites for Amazon Linux hosts rather than migrating static Windows workloads. Using Terraform, 2nd Watch automated the deployment of the website infrastructure.
The next phase of the company’s datacenter exit involved migrating its on-premises VMware environment to AWS to create a platform for the company to complete the datacenter evacuation internally. 2nd Watch reviewed the on-premises VMware configuration and requirements, completed dependency mapping, and developed a migration plan accounting for business criticality and application dependencies to enable the company’s VMware migration. 2nd Watch worked with the company’s operations team to develop a repeatable migration procedure, including migration automation where possible, to accelerate its migration.
The Business Benefits
The insurance management firm is using this engagement as a steppingstone to build momentum and internal skills and capabilities to drive future migration initiatives. Implementation of the 2nd Watch framework and methodology enabled this investment management firm to meet rising web traffic demands, company growth, and its customers’ and stakeholders’ needs.
