Integrated Laboratory Systems
Proving the right platform for diagnostic testing.
This integrated laboratory system needed assistance in selecting the right cloud provider for its workloads. They wanted to complete a POC to prove the case for the cloud.
We assessed their applications for cloud suitability and performed a POC pilot workload migration, preparing the company for full migration.
2nd Watch helped the company develop a phased migration plan for its workloads and a Foundational Architecture optimized for governance and security.
About the Business
As one of the nation’s largest integrated laboratory systems serving thousands of patients each day, this company is a market leader in clinical laboratory testing, performing millions of diagnostic tests each year. The company offers a comprehensive test menu that encompasses routine, molecular, prescription drug monitoring, genetics/genomics, and pathology testing services. The company is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the gold standard in laboratory accreditation, helping laboratories to maintain the accuracy of test results and ensure accurate patient diagnosis.
The Business Challenges
The laboratory was independently evaluating both AWS and Azure and need assistance selecting the right cloud provider for its workloads, including physical servers, VMs, and Windows workloads. Additionally, the company required a POC to prove the case for the cloud.
2nd Watch performed a Cloud Readiness Assessment of the laboratory’s current datacenter environment. Through a combination of discovery workshops, manual workload detection, and automated workload detection, 2nd Watch inventoried and analyzed the company’s workloads and applications to determine suitability for the cloud. 2nd Watch also evaluated the best method for migrating the company’s workloads, illustrating the future run cost of the current environment in the cloud, and provided a cost comparison between AWS and Azure.
The Business Benefits
After completing the application mapping, the laboratory determined Azure made the best financial and architectural fit. 2nd Watch helped the company develop a phased migration plan for its workloads and a Foundational Architecture optimized for governance and security. The laboratory and 2nd Watch completed a POC pilot workload migration, deploying the selected workloads in the cloud including Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and the company’s Intranet application, preparing the company for migration.
